In your reading you can see that there were many issues facing the United States in the mid- 1800's. One of the controversies that had to be addressed was the issue of fugitive slaves. What is a fugitive slave? What did Southerners expect from Congress with regard to fugitive slave laws? How did the North react? What are your thoughts about the effectiveness of the laws? Were they justified?
first off is the poster a replica or real? a fugitive slave is a slave that runs away! The south expected north people to help catch run away slaves. That is not very smart becuase why would the north help if they are really against that! The north reactions were not to follow it and turn away if they see it. The effectivness of the law was bad becuase it didn't do anything. It was not justice I am one hundred percent.
ReplyDeletePat, I think the poster is probaly a replica of a once real poster, does that make sense? The definition, that I found on Dictionary.com, of a fugitive slave is a person who is fleeing from prosecution, or intolerable circumstances. Southerners expected Congress, to enforce the law along with the north, but i'm not too sure congress enforced the law. I know for a fact that the North didn't enforce to fugitive slave law but i'm not sure if congress did. The law was completley ineffective becuase the slaves were running to the north, but if Northerners were against slavery why would they enforce such a law? They would simply lie to the Southerns and say they didn't see anything. Nothing about slavery was justified.
ReplyDeleteThe fugitive slave law stated that run away slaves could be re-claimed by their masters, even if they are free in the North. The South expected Congress to enforce the law, but they didnt do much to enforce it. The Northerners were against it as well, so if they were asked if they had seen any slaves pass by, they would simply say they didnt.
ReplyDeletea fugitive slave is a slave that does not obey the law and the law was that they were property and the property to stay are was supposed to then that's breaking the law technically speaking. The South that the Congress was going to enforce these laws in the North which some did but most did not use they knew that slavery was wrong and wanted it to stop happening. The North thought this law was ridiculous because if the slaves got a way why would they help them go back if they like slavery.I don't really know the word justify the means which know a TV show.
ReplyDeleteA fugitive slave was a slave that ran away. The southeners expected from the congress that they would inforce this law but the northerns didn't care for the law so if they did see a run away slave they just let it be instead of bringing it back to their owner. The law really didn't due much becuase the northeners didn't follow it so it didn't work well. I dont think anthing was justified about slavery if it was a law about slavery or having a slave.
ReplyDeleteHi kids!
ReplyDeleteFugitive slaves could be also called runaway slaves. These were slaves who escaped from their slave master to head North where there is no slavery. Southerners expected the Fugitive Slave Law to be enforced in the North. The North didn't really listen to this law. What the Northerners did if they saw a runaway or fugitive slave is that they would pretend they never saw one. If someone asks a Northerner if they saw a slave run by, the Northerner would act like they never saw the slave. These laws, I believe, weren't very effective since the Northerners pretended like it never existed. To make these laws more effective, Congress would have to do a better job enforcing the laws on the North. Slavery was not justified unfortunately.

A fugitive slave is a slave that flees or tired to escape. The south expected that northerners would cooperate them to catch the slaves that ran away from south to north and return their escaped property. The north reaction were to refuse the law. Of the tens of thousands lived in North in 1850s, only 299 were captured and returnedbto their owners. I think the effectiveness of the laws is not good. Because both sides were unhappy with the law and the law increased the contradictions between south and north.
ReplyDeleteA fugitive slave is a slave that tries to flee or escape. I thought it was crazy that the southerners thought that the northerners would actually capture a slave that they saw and return the slave to the south. They would just pretend nothing happened because no one can prove that the person actually saw the slave. The North didn't want to enforce the law. I do not think the law was effective at all because no one in the north was doing anything so it didn't make any difference.
