As you read section 21.2 you learned about the strengths and weaknesses of the North and South at the start of the Civil War. Explain how you feel these strengths and weaknesses will play a role in each sides war strategy. Based upon what you have read, and what you know about previous American wars (Revolutionary War), who do you think should win the war?

ReplyDeletebased upon what I've read the South will have the upper hand with money because they had so much money from the slave plantations but the North will have more heart because they wanted slavery abolished and they wanted slavery abolished and they had more heart and more fight in them and it was more of the northerners to fight or the South was fresh air which means they had the better weapons they could have paid people to fight and have more defense weapons like new battleships in the guns based on what I've read it's whoever has more heart and the most soldiers even though the Southerners have money that doesn't make a difference if they can't send out enough soldiers so the North will when the Civil War based on what I've read
ReplyDeleteBased on what I have read, I think that the North will be able to fight a longer war then the South, because the North has more people, more wealth, more food, more factories, and more raid road lines. Even though there military officers were not the best in America, they would become more experienced as the war went on. I think that the south had a powerful military, but they didn't have the resources to fight a long war. There officers were a lot more experienced in the beginning then Northern officers. The Southerners had General Robert E. Lee, who is considered one of the best American Generals in our history. The North blocked our shipments going into the south, so they could not trade their cotton. The advantage the South had was that they were fighting a defensive war. I think it makes sense that the Union won, even though the Confederacy beat us in every battle until Gettysburg. I think it makes sense because we were bigger, and had more resources. Even though England, who was bigger, with more resources, lost to us in the Revolutionary War, the Union isn't fighting a battle overseas, so they can get information on the war back and forth quicker.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Southerners had just as much heart in them as the North. Both sides believed strongly in what they were doing. The North wanted to end slavery, and the South didn't, and they were going to fight for what they believed in.
ReplyDeletethe strengths in the north are they have a bigger population then the sounth. THey had 22 milliion and the south had 9 million. THey had 21,000 miles of railroad and the north had 9,00. Some weaknesses of the North was its military leadership. The souths strengths were its military leadership. Souths weakness was its economy it couldnt support a war for long. I think the North should win because they had the right morals for not wanting slavery and because they had a bigger population and a better way of transportation with more railroads.
ReplyDeleteHello fellow students!
ReplyDeleteI think that the North will have a better chance in war because there is more people up North which could make up bigger armies, more railroad tracks which will help with transportation for war, more machines and factories which could help make the supplies and more money which will help buy more supplies. The South had a much better military officers than the North. The military officers in the South had more experience. This was obviously a plus for the South. Up in the North, the military officers weren't as great, but there was a lot more people. A plus for the North is that they were more prepared for war--supply wise that is. If I was placed back in the Civil War, I would actually have no idea who would win this war, it seemed it would be a close call! The North had more supplies, money, transportation and people and the South had a very good military leaders, which ALWAYS matters in war. If I had to choose, I would think the North would win the war, not just because they DID win, but looking at what they had. So, if I was back in the 1800's, I would feel that the North had a better chance of winning the war. If you judge who would win the Civil War by looking back at the Revolutionary War, the North would have a better chance. I mean, the states up North was where the war was going on, and they seemed to do pretty well since they won, obviously! In the Revolutionary War, there was no way that America would win, but we did! Though the North didn't have good military leaders, they definitely had a good chance of winning! I agree with Robbie's point that says that the North isn't fighting overseas like they did in the Revolutionary War so now they can get information to them quicker.

From the Chapter 20,I know that the north had strength that they had more population and railroad than south. And most of the nation's banks and wealth in gold were in North as well. But they still had weakness that they had poor military leadership. In the south, their strength and weakness are different. South only needed to have a defensive war in their territories and they had better military leadership. But their weakness was that their economy could not support a long war and transportation problem. I think the North could win the war. Because at the time of 1800s, the technology of human was not advanced likes today. So the really important conditions for an army to win the war should be the population and money. Although south had better military leadership,a good leader could not use his best ability with fewer population and not enough weapons. So North should still had better chance to win the war.

ReplyDeleteI think the north will win because they have alot more advantages. They have a bigger army. They have easier ways to get supplies to places. They have more food so the soldiers can eat. A disadvantage they had was the south's war generals. They were very smart I also think the north generals had raw talent for wars because Abe had been in only one war and I believe presidents back in the day called the shots. If hes not good at calling shots it can be a Cinderella story for the south. Also the shortage of weapons and bullets that hurts the south bad. I don't think the south could win unless they did something really amazing like make a new gun. Also as Sonia said they have expiernce!
ReplyDeleteI think the North will have a better chance at winning because the population in the North is much bigger than the South. One of the North's strengths was that they had so many people. The North had all of 22 million people while the South only had 9 million.90% of the nations manufacturing was in the north! Surprisingly the North had more farms so they could suply more food for the troops. Another advatage the north had was their railroades. the North had about 21,000 miles of railroad while the south only had 9,000 miles. Though it seems that the North had all the strengths, the south did have a few strengths themself. One Strength would be that to win the war the North would have to invade the south so that gave the south a home court advantage as they say now a days. The South's great stregnth was their military leadership, something that the North lacked. But, many would say they had more weaknesses, for one the south didn't have the economy for war. The south had few factories to produce juns and military supplies neccesary to fight in the war. As long as Southerners kept trading cotton the south wouldn't have a problem. Unfortunatly for them the Union blocked southern ports and cut off cotton trade. The southern armies had severe shortages. And lastly Southerners faced serious transportation problems aswell.
