In this chapter we will be learning about different reformations that occurred in the 1800's. Dorothea Dix worked hard to improve the conditions for the mentally ill. How did one person make such a difference?
Dorothea Dix made a difference because she believed in the cause she was fighting for. It took her two years, but she gathered all her information first hand. Then she prepared a report for the Massachusetts state legislature that showed how bad the mentally ill were treated. Dorothea also believed in herself and knew that the way the mentally Ill were being treated was horrid.
Dorthea Dix made a difference like Lauren said she belived in what she was fighting for. It may have taken her a while to make the difference of helping the mentally ill, but she kept fighting.
In general 1 person can make a difference. Today Kemba Walker made a difference by scoring a basket with only seconds remaining. So yes one person can make a difference. In this case Dorthea Dix also made a difference in history. She wanted to help the people who needed help. She mostly wanted to help the mentally help. She wanted what was right and she fought and finally got what she wanted and made a difference.
I strongly agree with what Pat said(for once!). Its very true, one person can make a huge difference, it could even be in a bad way. What Dorthea Dix did was very good thing by helping the mentally ill. She strongly believed in what she was fighting for, so she took action. She wanted to make a difference, and she did. She thought the mentally ill should be treated with more respect. Though it took awhile, she never gave up and kept on going. In my opinion, Dorthea Dix is a very inspirational person and did an amazing thing. ~~~~Sonia
The reason I think Dorthea Dix made a difference is because she wanted to help the mentally ill, and new they way they were being treated was wrong. She worked hard to have certain punishments banned, and to help the mentally ill, and didnt stop helping them until she died.
What great posts! Pat, I like how you used a current example to illustrate your point. One person can make a difference if they believe strongly in what they are doing! Great Job to all of you!
Dorothea Dix made a difference because she really wanted to help the mentally ill. She had a strong belief and she never gave up. She took two years gathering firsthand information and perpared the report for the Massachusetts state legisature. She tried her best to work for better conditions in prison. Horace Mann was another good example. He became the state of Massachusetts supervisor of education and spoke out on the need of public schools in towns and villages. He used his position of leadership to influence other people's opinions. His speeches convinced the people to vote for higher taxes to pay for education.
Dorthea Dix made a difference because she worked hard at it. She saw all of these horrible things in prison and she knew she had to try to make changes. She helped make prison's which helped give women rights.
