Women's Rights

In the previous chapter we learned about Sacagawea and the Pioneer Women. In Chapter 18 you read about the women who were instrumental in the fight for equal rights for women. Compare the Pioneer Women to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Sojourner Truth. How were their lives the same, how were they different? Why do you feel that the 1840's was the time for a change in women's rights?

  1. One similarity of these women is that they all fulfilled traditional roles in society. The difference is that the reformers were in a better position to work for social change. For pioneer women survival was the most important thing, and they had no time to work for reform. I think that the 1840's were really important for a change in women's rights because women were encouraged by the other reform movements to start a reform of their own. Another reason was that many women were part of the other reform movements and they saw the opportunity to work for thier own rights.

  2. A similarity I noticed was that the women both had hardships they had to over come. After the long journey the pioneer women had on the trial showed people that women had strengths and abilities. The reformers had hardships they also had to overcome, they had to make people listen. The reformers had to show the rest of the world that the way women were treated wasn't right. I feel that the 1840's was a time for change because America knew a change was coming, America started to see that slavery wasn't right and that things were going to have to change soon. But, before slavery, women's rights had to be noticed because women couldn't preach about how wrong slavery was if they had about the same amount of freedom that the slaves themselves had.

A difference that i noticed was that the pioneer women had to be always on the move the women you did the womens rights move didnt have the chalenges the pioneer women had. I think that the 1840's was a big time for change because slavery was changed pionner women made change they got the right to vote. The women who did the womens right movement made a chang in their society

  4. Like Lauren said they had hardships to overcome, but with hard work there are rewards. Both groups went through alot, but what happen because of it, they felt they could do stuff. The pioner women started schools and libraries, in Seneca they hosted a whole campaign. I felt that the 1840 was a good time to change becase other things were starting to change. The mindset towards jail's, riligion, etc.

  5. Like Lauren said, a similarity between the pioneer women and the women listed is that they had rough times that they had to overcome. For example, the pioneer women had a rough life and couldn't complain to the men and always looks happy. Thats almost exactly what these women debating for their rights had to overcome; not having a say. They decieded to speak out and not be silent to the men anymore. The 1840's was definatly time for women's rights to form because its been about 60 years since America became a country, and its better to change early than to change later in history. The women could have more of a difficult time changing in more of the later years. And anyway, it helped boost the smaller debate aganist women's rights in the 1900's.

  6. All of the women had challenges to overcome. All of the women had a lot of hard work to do, whatever the pioneer women were expected to do at home were expected to do on the trail. Both groups had to get through hardships but it all paid off in the long run. The 1840's was a good year because there was a lot of changes occuring. All of the women at the time were hardworkers.

  7. The pioneer women had to face many challenges, like staying alive while they were on the trail, and taking care of the children, and cooking. But once they arrived west and established where they were going to live, the pioneer women made schools, social societys, and libraries, and earned the right to vote, and have their voices heard. Lucia Mott, Sojourner Truth, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton also had to face many challenges. They couldnt have their voices heard, and men wouldnt take them seriouslly. But once they organised togeather, and decided that they wanted to have their own voices heard, planned the Senneca Falls Convention. Like the pioneer women, these women worked hard to be heard and never gave up, and eventualy, women would earn all the rights that the men had.

  9. In the 1700's when Sacagawea was with Luis and Clark women's life was very hard! They had to mostly travel around that time period. They had to do what they were suppose to do at home. In the 1840's women were settled in alot more. They were more advanced 40 years later so their lives were a little easier. They both had challenges to overcome like Billy said. I don't think the laws changed for women I think the women changed laws for everybody. They were not greedy!
