Modern Day Slavery

The question was raised, "Is there slavery in the modern world?" There are examples of child slavery, and slavery in Africa. However, there is also discussion about industries who pay their employees so poorly that it is the same as slavery.
Slavery does exist today despite the fact that it was prohibited by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1956 UN Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery. Common characteristics distinguish slavery from other human rights violations. A slave is:
forced to work -- through mental or physical threat;
owned or controlled by an 'employer', usually through mental or physical abuse or threatened abuse;
dehumanised, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as 'property';
physically constrained or has restrictions placed on his/her freedom of movement. (www.antislavery.org) Are you surprised to learn that slavery continues today? Do you feel that we can ever truly abolish slavery in the world? Feel free to cite sources that you find, but be cautious, much of what I found was either a blog (opinion) or very out dated.

  1. I am incredibly shocked that slavery still continues today, like many others I find slavery wrong and think it isn't just and was NEVER just. I don't know if slavery was truly ever abolished. According to Wikipedia slavery dates back to more than a century before the United States was founed which was in 1776.

  3. I am really surprised to learn that slavery continue today. I think we can and we must truly abolish slavery in the world because the modern day slaves have the terrible life like the slaves before the Civil War in America. From Google, I know that about 17500 people were forced or sold into United States after being fraudulent each year. They are mainly forced labor without pay. This is not only a crime, but also a nasty behaviour.

  4. I am surprised that there is still slavery. Yes I think people can abolish slavery. That means another war. If some countries that are strongest come together they can take out slavery but the chances of that happening is not very good.

  5. I am also suprised that slavery still exists. If people work hard enough to abolish slavery it could definitely be stopped forever. If a lot of countries work together slavery will be abolished.

  6. I'm not surprise slavery still exists today because slavery has been around record and even the most successful Empire of all time Rome had slavery and they were the longest lasting empire ever did not have problems with slavery. The only reason America had a problem with it is physically not make sense to have slavery with our Constitution is in every man is equal. So slavery was against the Constitution so they have to stop slavery as it was against the Constitution and want to rewrite the Constitution just so they could have slavery

  7. Like Mike said, I am not really surprised slavery still exits, because it has been going on for about 4,000 years. I dont really think it will ever be gone everywhere, or at least for a long time, because there are always people who dont care about other people, and will continue to treat certain people like slaves.
