QUILT SQUARES

In this chapter you will learn about what life was like for African Americans in the mid 1800's. Quilting and quilt squares were very important to them. Please consider the following questions: What practical purpose did the quilt squares serve? Why else would the squares be important to African Americans? The graphic organizer on page 257 shows the same person four times. Who do you think this person is and what do you think this indicates about slave life?

  1. The quiltes were used to tell stories. In the squares they had a hidden message saying freedom and hope. Its about a person growing up into slavery and how they had to work out even in the sun.

  2. I think the quilt squares purpose was to make the African Americans feel comfortable. I also think the quilt was important because like the egyptians had hieroglyphics the African Americans made a quilt telling their story on it. I think the person is a slave trying to escape from the brutal life of the plantation. I think the quilt indicates the hard life of slaves and the hard life of trying to escape it.

  3. Hello fellow 8th graders,

Some of the squares helped the slaves escaped through the symbols of the quilt! As Tara said they could tell stories of freedom, hope, and courage. The picture represents a child growing up to an adult working hard for something most likely a slave working on a plantation. Another interpuation could be a family that are slaves and they loose their relatives to auction.

  4. I agree with Lauren and Tara about the purpose of the quilt squares, but they also helped lead them through the underground railroad. African Americans who occupy houses throughout the underground railroad made quilt squares to help guide them with the pictures. It also told the escape slaves if they were save in the area they were in or not. The quilts would be hung on clothing lines so the escape slaves can see them. The slave owners had no idea the quilts were used for these purposes, they thought they were ordinary quilts. The graphic organizer shows, in my opinion, slaves. It shows that at any age, and Afrian American could be a slave, as you can see the small baby in the picture. It shows the taller figure carrying objects of some sort. That, I believe, shows the hard work the slaves had to endure, since the figure seems to be having trouble carrying the objects on his back.

  5. Like Tara said, the quilt squares tell sories of hope and freedom, and they were also used to help slaves escape, with different kinds of hidden messeges in them, telling them where to go, and telling them if the house with the quilt was a safe house, or not. In the quilt above, it looks like it is showing a slave working in the sun.

  6. The quilt squares were used to provide comfort for slaves and tell stories of their lives. The quilt maker used animals and figures from Africa and America to illustrate their brutal life. The messages hidden in the quilt is the hope for freedom. The graphic organizer shows the slave at different times in life. It indicates that the slaves should do hard work for their whole life and they hoped to escape it.

  8. The quilt squares tell a story of what this slave has done or been through throughout their lives. The quilt squares provide hope for one day the particular slave will be free. The quilt also provided comfort for the slave.
