The Wild, Wild West!

In the video you watched in class today the narrator expressed how the "Corps of Discovery" was stupified by what they saw once they arrived West of the Mississippi. Why do you think they were astonished by what they saw? Why did they document so many animals and plants in this part of the journey?

  1. They were astonished because they were in a new area. It was strange and beautiful. Also, they documented the plants and and animals, because when other explorers or people coming to go cross country they would know about everything.

  2. They were astonihed of the new area becuase it was all planes. There is no trees it was the first time seeing that. The documented plants and animals so other people could get to expirence th new animals. They probaly wanted to document the new land in case of another country trying to take over.

  3. I agree with Charlie and Pat, the travelers were amazed at how much land they saw. They were used to trees but, seeing all this land empty land, must have seemed like a paradise. They documented all their animal findings because if anything ever happened to them along the journey they had proof of what they discovered and people back home could work on discovering more of these so called "strange" animals.

  4. I agree with all of the above, say you never seen a ocean before and have not hear of it. then you see it and its peacfuly. they feel amazed at what they saw. they documented it to tell people what to eat what to avoid. so if some one wanted to live there. they were aware of what they where in for.

  5. Lewis and Clark were astonished because they were used to seeing planes and when they came across planes they thought of it as harmony because it was quite and they documented what they saw like plant and animals so that if they didn't make it back they had something showing that they found all these new discoveries . Also they documented it so they could show other people and make them aware of the new plant and animals they found.

  6. Lewis and Clark were amazed and astonished at the new land because there were no trees in the plains. Lewis and Clark were very used to trees being everywhere around them. They documented plants and animals because they wanted to show the people back in the cities what they found. It seemed Jefferson also wanted to know what they found on the new land. I believe Jefferson wanted to make sure that he didn't waste millions of dollars for dangerous land.

  7. Wow, great discussion my friends! I like Mike's analogy about never seeing or hearing the ocean, imagine what that would be like! With regard to the animals, why were they seeing so many new animals?
