Westward Expansion

You just watched "America - The Story of Us" episode 3.
After the Treaty of Paris is signed in 1783 and the new American
nation is born, a vast continent lies to the west of the mountains,
waiting to be explored. This land is not empty – Native American
Indians are spread across the land mass, as are Spanish colonists
and French explorers.
The conquest of the West by pioneers and trailblazers is a story
marked by courage and hardship. Armed with knowledge from
hardened mountain men like Jedediah Smith, millions of Americans
keep heading westward in the hopes of claiming lands and finding
prosperity. Considering what you saw in the video please discuss the following questions:
How did the Louisiana Purchase change the United States?
Why was Thomas Jefferson eager for Lewis and Clark to explore the West?

  1. The Louisiana purchase changed the United States because it gave the U.S. more land, gave us riches and defined us as Americans. The deal was the biggest in history. We had to pay 3 cents an acre for Louisiana.
Thomas Jefferson was so eager for Lewis and Clark's journey because he wanted the U.S. to expand. One main drive for Lewis and Clark was because they wanted to see what was on the other side. Once there, they discovered 3 hundred species, and uncovered the west's most valuable commodity, beavers.

  2. I believe that the Louisiana purchase changed the United States because it was a big move in expanding towards the west. It also gave us more farm land, and the U.S grew bigger, and more powerful. Jefferson wanted Lewis and Clark to journey to the west was because he wanted to see what lay beyond the mountains, so that we could take the land and grow bigger. Lewis and Clark then weren't doing so well, and ate their horses. Then they were saved by Sacagewea.

  4. Louisiana Purchase changed the United States by giving the United States more farm land and getting Spain as a allie. 15 million dollars back then is a lot of money where they get it?
Lauren said 3 cents for an acre is that alot or a little amount of money?

  6. Thomas Jefferson was eager for Lewis and Clark to explore the West because he wanted more land. They were heading west so they wanted to see what was on the other side. They also wanted money which they did from the beaver pellets. As Robbie said they were saved by a Indian named Sacagewea.

  7. The Louisiana Purchase changed the United States because it gave us more land. If the Louisiana Purchase hadn't happened, it would probably would take us longer to get that land. We possibly may not even have it present day...maybe. Jefferson was eager for Louis and Clark to go west because he wanted more land and to see what type of land and what was on that land. There could be valuable things (good thing this isn't Miss Abineri's class!) out west. I was ammused when Robbie added that Louis and Clark ate their horses!

  8. The Louisiana purchase changed the U.S because it gave us much more land then we had currently. Thomas Jefferson was so eager for Lewis and Clark to explore the West because he didn't know what they would find. It turned out that they found beaver, and a lot of them. They could catch enough beavers in a week for 3 months pay! I was confused when Sonia said " We possibly may not even have it present day " because I thought eventually someone would have to go even if it wasn't Lewis and Clark
