"Sea to Shining Sea"

The United States acquired new Western territories through diplomacy and war. As we heard in the video, some feel that once we became independent from England all this land was ours. Now that you have finished the chapter, how do you feel about what we did to extend our great nation from "sea to shining sea"?

  1. I think that it was a good idea, and we wern't really stealing all of this land we faught for it and we showed we were a strong contry. It also make our contry big and we might of had the impression of being a threat so no other contry would try to begin a war with us.

  2. As tara said It was a great idea. I think we deserved the areas we fought for. We lost lives in the making but it worked out perfectly. I think Usa could of took more of Mexico if they tried. If my country was getting taken over I would obvious be mad. I think the best deal of all was the Louisana purchase. The worse treaty was the Gatson purchase it was expensive and a lot of money.

  3. I agree with both Tara and Pat, it was a great idea. Even though we lost lives through the fights we came out dominant. I also agree that we could have taken over more of Mexico if we tried, but deciding it wasn't worth it was a better idea because we would have lost more lives.

  4. Expanding across the land was a smart idea by our government like Tara, Pat and Lauren said but the way we did it was not necessary. That land was not ours, so our thinking was off and it made us greedy. Going to war was not good.

I agree with all of the ^above^ because if we didn't do this we couldn't prove that we had power and that we could hadle your selfes. like the war with mexico they attack us then we took the war to their capital just to show that it was not a joke.

  6. I think we were right in expanding, but we could have made different decisions that would have saved American lives, and still gotten land. The Louisiana Purchase was a great deal, but I do not believe that we needed to invade Florida, and could have offered to buy it first. I think the 49th parallel thing was a good idea because we got some Oregon land without paying, or having a war. I do not think we should have taken any more of Mexico then we did, because we already had a lot of land, and took a lot of land from them.

  7. Thank you for all your awesome responses. I hope you all found it interesting to learn how our country came to be, it certainly is an interesting story whether you agree or disagree with how we did it!

  8. I think that it was an excellent idea to expand from sea to sea. People might have thought we were "bullies" but we were doing what's best for our country. And were also showing other countries that we are a strong country and we can win any war!

  9. I agree with EVERYONE because we have more land and prove that we are a strong and idependant country. We fought for it too, which makes us look stronger. Agreeing with Robbie, we didn't need to take that much land from Mexico. It was a little...bully-ish.
